Tulane promotes itself as a sustainability-focused university, yet its approach to glass recycling leaves students without the knowledge they need to participate effectively. While the infrastructure for glass recycling exists on campus due to the school’s partnership with local organization Glass Half Full, many students don’t know how to access or properly use it. Without clear guidance, an important opportunity for sustainability is being overlooked, and glass recycling at Tulane is confusing, inaccessible, and, ultimately, ineffective.
Right now, Tulane students have to seek out information on glass recycling themselves. Unless they take an environmental class, they’re unlikely to learn much about the process. First-year and underclassmen students living on campus receive no mention of glass recycling in orientation materials or dorm guides, meaning a large portion of the student body is completely unaware that a glass recycling program with Glass Half Full even exists. Additionally, the glass recycling bins are tucked away behind dorms, making them difficult to find, and there are no campus-wide maps or signs directing students to their locations. Even among those who do know about the bins, there is no clear guidance on how to recycle glass correctly — what types of glass are accepted, how to avoid contamination, or why proper recycling methods matter. As a result, much of the glass that does make it into the bins is recycled improperly and ultimately cannot be reused.
This lack of visibility and education is a serious issue. Glass is one of the most sustainable materials to recycle because it can be reused indefinitely without degrading in quality. However, if glass is mixed with non-recyclable materials or improperly sorted, it often ends up in landfills anyway. Tulane has already invested in the infrastructure for glass recycling through its partnership with Glass Half Full, but without proper outreach and education, that investment is going to waste.
This issue is not difficult to address. The Tulane Office of Sustainability has the opportunity to make glass recycling more accessible and effective. First-year orientation materials and dorm guides should include clear information on where to find the glass recycling bins and how to use them properly. Maps showing bin locations should be placed in dorms and public spaces so students don’t have to rely on word of mouth to locate them. Sustainability education could be incorporated into RA meetings, ensuring that all students, regardless of their major or prior knowledge, receive basic guidance on glass recycling. Even a simple campus-wide email or short class presentation could go a long way in making glass recycling efforts more visible and successful. These are simple, low-cost solutions that would make a major difference in Tulane’s sustainability efforts.
Some might argue that students should take the initiative to learn about glass recycling, but that assumes the necessary information is readily available, which, at Tulane, it isn’t. Sustainability efforts are most effective when they are easy to understand and widely communicated. By ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge they need, Tulane can turn its underutilized Glass Half Full program into one that is actively sustainable.

Lauren extremely well written, and thought out. You are correct in saying that Tulane should be more involved in making the glass program work, and hopefully Tulane will take all of your suggestions into account, and make this program a model for other universities to follow. Our planets environmental well being is too important to ignore.
