Commit to getting fit with free, local yoga classes

Laurel Ettinger, Contributing Reporter

It is that time of the year again, folks. Motivation is running a bit low, classes are getting into the big research projects and exams and all of a sudden you can’t remember the last time you went to Reily Student Recreation Center. Looking for something to keep you fit while still keeping it fresh? Want to get back in shape and prepare yourself to face your family and the holiday feasts ahead? Here are some free workout classes that you can take off campus, just an Uber or streetcar ride — or a run if you’re feeling really motivated — away.

Project Common Ground

Where: Crescent City CrossFit

When: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday Nov. 5, Nov. 19 and Dec. 3.

What: This event is, unfortunately, limited to those who identify as men, but is an amazing opportunity nonetheless. It is a three-part exercise series that features a warm up, sweat and cool down. There are complementary refreshments and chances to win some cool swag, and even a gym membership up for grabs. It’s a perfect environment for men looking for an exciting, supportive community with whom to get fit.

Community Yoga

Where: Propeller Incubator

When: 6 p.m. every Wednesday

What: Those looking for a nice place to end their day, look no further. Community Yoga offers vinyasa yoga classes. Be warned, there is limited parking. On the bright side, however, mats are provided. The organization’s website stresses that this is an all-levels class, and people attending should look forward to a relaxing, mindful experience.

Jazz Yoga

Where: Old U.S. Mint

When: 10 a.m. on Saturdays

What: Ever get a little bit bored during yoga? This class solves the problem in classic New Orleans fashion. There is live jazz by a professional pianist whilst participants yogi-out, providing entertainment as well as enlightenment. Similar to Community Yoga, Jazz Yoga welcomes all levels of experience.
