Newcomb-Tulane College hosted the first Front Porch Friday event of the year, “In Good Company: Launching Your Academic Year with Support and Connection,” on Sept. 5. 

Stands featured success coaching, college advising, the Tulane Navy ROTC Unit, the NTC Dean’s Ambassador Program, the Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment and the A.B. Freeman School of Business. The event also provided food and drinks from local businesses.

“This year we are doing it [Front Porch Fridays] a little bit differently in that we want to focus on having a bit more purpose and intention … So each month there is a theme,” Director of NTC Events Rebecca Norwood said. “Each month there is a sort of feature program, and then we invite other units of NTC and other schools to participate based on the theme.”

These events were previously overseen by the Office of Academic Enrichment, but are now led by the NTC Events department. 

Front Porch Fridays are “how I found out about college advising, and now I work for them. New freshmen should take advantage of all the amazing opportunities offered,” sophomore Ryleigh Shullaw said. 

Norwood said Front Porch Fridays are applicable to second and third-years, with themes revolving around research and studying abroad. 

“It’s for everybody, it really covers all four years,” Norwood said. 

“I would definitely take advantage of the opportunity to talk to people more one-on-one for things like the Dean’s Ambassadors and advising programs. It’s fun to get to know people with your friends in a more casual setting,” sophomore Camille Stark said.

The next Front Porch Friday will highlight grant and research opportunity exploration on Oct. 10.

“There’s so much opportunity on campus,” Norwood said. Front Porch Fridays are “a central place to come and hear about those opportunities.”
