Tucked into Octavia Books on the quaint corner of Octavia and Laurel Streets, Café Malou has at last opened. Strolling in through the bookstore, it was hard to decide which looked more delectable: the literature selection or the café menu.

I went with a friend around 1 p.m. After a 10-minute wait, we were able to get seated. This is a full table service café, so a server will take your order once you get seated. There were some tables in the front with more light, and some tucked away with some dimly lit lamps, providing a romantic, cozy atmosphere. You can also grab a cup of coffee and pastry at the counter if you are looking for a quick fix to accompany your book shopping.
For coffee, I got a cardamom orange cold brew. This exceeded all my expectations, having a smooth coffee flavor with the orange coming through bright and clear. The drink was shaken, so there was a thick foam on top that had a beautiful, soft orange color. The promised hint of cardamom was missing, overpowered by the orange, but this is still a great option if you are looking for a sweet coffee without milk.
For my main meal, I got an open-faced baked crab sandwich with pimento cheese and herby breadcrumbs. This came with a side of a soup or house salad. I went with the salad, which was a little gem lettuce lightly dressed with flavored ranch. It came in a large portion for $16, and the sandwich was also loaded up with enough crab to spill over the sides of the bread. This was perfectly cheesy and flavorful, and the lemon cut through the richness and added a bright punch.

My friend got the warm crustless quiche for $14, with basil, raclette cheese, caramelized onion and a side of toast with olive oil. This was similarly a generous portion, with a nicely baked top. The inside was smooth and creamy, without being too liquid or cakey like quiches can sometimes be. The basil added a welcome brightness to the dish.
We finished off with the chocolate pot de crème for $8, which was a chocolate custard with an orange whipping cream. The generous portion of whipped cream was lovely and added a great texture and flavor with the chocolate, but the custard was thinner than expected.
The generous portions, outstanding flavor and comfortable atmosphere make Café Malou stand out. For book lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike, this spot offers a cozy vibe where you can read a book and have a bite.
