Thankfully, head coach of Tulane University football head coach Jon Sumrall seems content with his current situation at Tulane.
The Green Wave’s hopes for the 2025 College Football Playoffs rely on three main things: beating the University of Memphis on Nov. 7, starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff performing at a high level and head coach Jon Sumrall.
Sumrall joined Tulane in the 2024 offseason, and since his start, he has brought Tulane to a 15-6 record. Before he coached at Tulane, Sumrall succeeded as the head coach at Troy University, where he carried them to a 23-4 record. His experience and intelligence on the sideline have made Tulane football excel in the past two seasons.
Louisiana State University recently fired its head coach, Brian Kelly, after a crushing loss to Texas A&M University at home in Death Valley. Other prominent programs like the University of Florida, Penn State University, the University of California Los Angeles and the University of Arkansas also fired their head coaches, which might be enticing to a small school coach on a hot streak like Sumrall.
Sumrall has said he values things other than money or fame, which is surprising for a college coach. When asked this week about the prospect of moving to a different program, Sumrall said, “UTSA has 100% of my focus.”
However, keep your listening ears on in the coming weeks. Before Kelly joined LSU, he coached at the University of Notre Dame, and he was denying transfer rumors the same season that he left for more money. College football coaches are notably some of the greediest people in sports, but Sumrall’s words have steered him in the right direction. He should stay at Tulane, where he has already made a name for himself as an outstanding coach and could continue to elevate the football program.

Great leader of men and what an ambassador for the university. Find a way to keep him , whatever it takes.
