The Tulane University Green Wave football team was ranked No. 24 by the Associated Press Top 25 poll, receiving 167 points. The ranking comes after Tulane beat the Florida Atlantic Owls 35 – 24 at the homecoming game on Saturday.
In the AP Poll, sportswriters and broadcasters rank teams one through 25, with each first-place ranking receiving 25 points and each 25th-place ranking receiving one point. These points are then combined to form the Top 25 poll.
Tulane was previously ranked last season, when the Wave was No. 18 in the AP poll on November 17 before losing to Memphis on Thanksgiving.
Also ranked is fellow American Athletic Conference team and Group of Five playoff contender University of North Texas, who are ranked No. 22 by the AP.
The Green Wave is also ranked No. 25 by the USA Today Coaches Poll, where Division I Football Bowl Subdivision coaches rank teams.
Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is credited with much of the Green Wave’s recent success, along with former coach Willie Fritz. Sumrall is reportedly a top contender to take over Auburn University’s football team after Athletic Director John Cohen fired Hugh Freeze from the head coach position. It is unclear whether Sumrall would consider making the move.
