Tulane University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams had a great showing this past weekend in Louisville, Kentucky and Boston, respectively. The results of these events were one for the Green Wave books.
Bernard Cheruiyot, a sophomore and the men’s team top runner, broke the school’s 3,000-meter record with a time of 7 minutes, 49.26 seconds at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston.
Women’s team runner Blezzin Kimutai, a sophomore, beat her own personal and school record with a time of 16:00.94 in the 5,000-meter race. Neither Cheruiyot nor Kimutai will be competing in the upcoming meet this weekend.
The track and field teams also found success in Louisville this past weekend. Presley Wolfe, a sophomore and star pole vaulter for the women’s team, finished in second with a mark of 4.02 meters, sixth best in program history.
Cara Salberry, a graduate student, also made her mark at the PNC Lenny Lyles Classic. She placed No. 13 in the weight throw with a distance of 17.84 meters, which is the second-best mark in program history. Both Wolfe and Salberry will be competing in the upcoming meet this weekend.
These meets, the fourth and fifth of the season respectively, signal a major triumph for the track and field teams, especially as these competitors look to improve their rankings early in the season. The team is just two months into a season that lasts until May or June, depending on the team’s performance at the American Conference Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, from Feb. 27-28 and at the American Conference Outdoor Championship in Denton, Texas, from May 15-17.
Both men’s and women’s track and field teams will look to continue their success this weekend at the Badger Windy City Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Chicago on Feb. 6-7. The men’s team is only sending three athletes to compete, while the women’s team is sending 10.
