Tulane University Athletics’ official mascot, Riptide, has been selected as the grand marshal for the Krewe of Thoth parade, which will roll through Uptown on Sunday, Feb. 15 at noon. The honor places Tulane’s beloved mascot at the center of one of New Orleans’ longest-running Mardi Gras traditions.
A Mardi Gras grand marshal serves as the honorary, festive leader of a parade, often riding at the very front to energize the crowd, honor the community and signal the start of the procession. The grand marshal wears a distinctive, decorated sash and, sometimes, a suit and hat.
Founded in 1947, the Krewe of Thoth is known for its elaborate floats and for honoring individuals and organizations that contribute to the city’s cultural and civic life. This year’s parade theme is “Thoth Tunes.”
The parade will begin at the intersection of State Street and Tchoupitoulas Street. It will go down Henry Clay Avenue, continue to Magazine Street, and head east down Magazine until it reaches Napoleon Avenue. After Napoleon Avenue, the parade will march down St. Charles Avenue towards Harmony Circle, then loop around to conclude at Poydras Street.
