The Tulane men’s tennis team has begun its season with a 1-2 record, losing twice in a row to the University of Mississippi and Louisiana State University. Similarly, the Tulane women’s tennis team has begun with a 2-4 record, starting with three back-to-back losses to Texas A&M University, Baylor University and Auburn University.
Recently, the Tulane women’s tennis faced off against LSU, which ended in a loss of 1-6. The one point came from a win during a singles match, thanks to the diligent efforts of sophomore Summer Chandler. Senior Micah Pierce was close to winning her singles match as well, but unfortunately, proved unsuccessful during a tiebreaker that ended 11-9.
Despite a difficult start, the Tulane women’s tennis team secured its 10th consecutive win against the University of Louisiana this Sunday with a 4-0 victory. Tulane won the doubles point under the teams of Chandler and Leigh Van Zyl, as well as Campbell Ricci and Pierce. Natalia Perez, Van Zyl and Diana Badalyan also led the team to success with their singles victories.
The sole win from the Green Wave’s men’s team was a 7-0 sweep against Southern University. This success was due to singles wins from Daniel Phillips, Alec Gaudin, Asaf Friedler, Lance Nisbet, Andres Delgadillo and Steven Rice, along with doubles wins from the teams of Gaudin and Mercer, as well as Delgadillo and Friedler.
Coming down from this success, the men’s tennis team experienced a 1-6 loss against Ole Miss. The Green Wave earned the doubles point due to the stunning win from Gaudin and Mercer, and a nerve-wracking victory from Phillips and Nisbet. Despite the doubles teams’ success, Ole Miss won all singles matches.
Similarly, last Tuesday, the men’s tennis team lost 0-7 against LSU. In doubles, Phillips and Nisbet won 6-4 at No. 1, but LSU gained the point by winning Nos. 2 and 3. After LSU defeated Tulane in each doubles match, resulting in our most recent loss.
Despite a difficult start to their seasons, first-year Delgadillo and sophomore Chandler have delivered standout performances in both doubles and singles. The other new men’s tennis freshman, Piotr Andrzejewski, has yet to get a substantial amount of time on the court to fairly assess his ability.
Traveling this Friday, the Tulane Tennis teams get another shot at victory on Feb. 13. The Men’s team is competing against the University of Texas at San Antonio at 1 p.m. CST, and the Women’s team is competing against the University of Tulsa at 5 p.m. CST.
