Tulane University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams have faced a spring season of significant highs and lows. Both squads have been met with fierce competition across the board and have been on both ends of shutout matches. The most significant struggles have been in singles, but the teams have done well in doubles matches.
The first match of the season was against Southern University, where the Green Wave crushed the competition with a 7-0 victory. Two matches against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of Alabama at Birmingham were postponed due to weather concerns.
This predicament was followed by a resounding loss against Louisiana State University. While the duo of junior Daniel Phillips and sophomore Lance Nisbet won in a doubles competition, LSU beat Tulane during every singles match.
Shortly thereafter, the team had a brief streak of success, including close games against the University of Texas at San Antonio and a more dominant victory against the University of New Orleans.
Against UNO, the team performed better in singles matches, with Nisbet, junior Alec Gaudin and sophomore Steven Rice winning in every set. The highlights have consistently been Phillips and Nisbet, who are ranked No. 43 in men’s tennis doubles nationally.
The team is currently competing in the Diablos College Tennis Invitational in Tempe, Arizona. The tournament began with a loss against Arizona State University, despite fierce competition from junior Asaf Friedler and sophomore AJ Mercer.
Further losses against the University of Washington, Boise State University and Florida Atlantic University added to the challenging stretch during this season. However, the team was able to turn their luck around against the University of South Alabama, with the biggest triumphs continuing to be during doubles matches.
The team’s next matches will be this Friday and Sunday, against Liberty University and Old Dominion University, respectively.
The women’s team had a similar ambivalent track record this season. They began the season with three straight losses, most notably in the first match of 2026 against Texas A&M University.
The most brutal competition was during singles, where first-year Natalia Perez and sophomore Campbell Ricci struggled to hold their own. The ITA Kickoff Weekend fared slightly better.
Despite a resounding loss against Auburn University, the team managed to triumph over the University of Nevada at Reno. In particular, Ricci deserves to be lauded for her performance, as her wins during the second and third sets helped lead the team to victory.
After postponed matches against Southern and Southeastern Louisiana University, Tulane was met with another loss against LSU. While sophomore Summer Chandler had a straight set victory during singles, LSU was able to secure victory during doubles matches.
The ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship proved to be a marked contrast against the rough competition of previous matches. While there have been some losses against Wichita State University and the University of South Alabama, it has ultimately been a triumphant reign thus far.
The team led three shutouts against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southern and North Texas University with successes across the board in singles and doubles. With a match against UAB canceled, the team will compete in the championship with their next games occurring this Friday against UNC Charlotte and Rice University.
