It was bound to happen. Rowan Brumbaugh, Tulane University’s star point guard, has entered the transfer portal after yet another dominant season.
Brumbaugh averaged 19.2 points, 3.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 42.8% from the field and 36.1% from 3. What’s more, he started every game of the entire season and averaged more than 36 minutes per game.
That means if you tuned into any Tulane men’s basketball game at any time, there was a more than 90% chance you would see Brumbaugh on the floor.
He also had three incredible games to close the season, in which he never scored less than 25 points in any of them.
Now, he’s off to bigger things, which could mean a bigger school. Indiana University is looking to improve its backcourt and is rumored to be looking at Brumbaugh. Professional basketball is also in play, as he will test the NBA Draft process.
However, it is more likely that he goes the college route, which will give him the best chance to make a lot of money.
Brumbaugh joined wings Scotty Middleton and Curtis Williams Jr. in the portal, meaning that the Green Wave is losing three players who appeared in every single game last season.
Head coach Ron Hunter will probably have to deal with a lot of roster turnover, and it is not guaranteed that players who have not transferred yet will not in the future.
Retaining starter Tyler Ringgold will now be a top priority, as he brings a ton of energy and athleticism to the court. He also improved his 3-point shooting last season, so hopefully he decides to return.
Sophomore guard KJ Greene, the explosive spark plug and crafty scorer, would have a huge opportunity for a breakout season if he decides to stay. He’s shown serious flashes of brilliance with circus finishes and quick hands, and he could be Brumbaugh’s successor.
Hunter will now have to be active in the transfer portal as he tries to lead Tulane back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995.
