Beyond a week full of sunny weather, poisonous caterpillars and copious amounts of crawfish for Tulane University students, it’s also been an exciting week for the Green Wave Sailing Team.
The team closed out its regular season, casually sweeping the South East Interscholastic Sailing Association Championship and securing spots at nationals all while setting up shop to host nationals on Louisiana’s very own Lake Pontchartrain.
Before the championship, Tulane took one last road trip up north to New London, Connecticut, and Annapolis, Maryland, on April 11 and 12 for the Thompson Trophy Open Team Race and the Truxtun Umstead Open Fleet Race.
In New London, the Green Wave went 9-6, finishing sixth overall and collecting some impressive wins against teams like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sailing Team, Yale University Sailing and Dartmouth University Sailing.
Further south in Annapolis, Tulane lost its footing and placed No. 11 at the Truxtun Umstead Regatta with 250 points.
In its A division, which was led by skipper Ava Anderson and crews Cate Anderson and Ella May Corckran, carried the team with a fourth-place finish and three race wins. Meanwhile, the B division placed No. 15 with 151 points.
Back home in New Orleans at the SEISA Fleet Race Conference Championship, Tulane still wasn’t ready to give up its title after six straight years of sweeping both the open and the women’s titles, finishing first or second in all but one race.
In the open championship, Tulane finished 25 total points over teams like Rice University Sailing and the University of Kansas Sailing Team. The A division finished with 11 points, with a standout performance from skipper Hamilton Barclay with his crew, Taylor Bartell, who finished first place in the first three rotations of the regatta.
Our B division carried the momentum, following up with a total of 14 points with skippers like Christian Ebbin and Tate Christopher, along with their crews, Sabrina Anderson and Hope Breslin.
Along with the bragging rights of the sweep, Tulane locked in its automatic bid to both the 2026 ICSA Open Team Race National Championship and the ISCA Women’s Team Race National Championship.
Now looking ahead, the Green Wave will host the ICSA Team Race National Championship right on Lake Pontchartrain with the open regatta set for April 23-25 and the Women’s championship following the 26-27.
If you’re not too busy studying for finals or wandering Bourbon Street with a daiquiri in hand, be sure to check out some high-level sailing and cheer on our very own Green Wave Sailing Team.
