A gunfight killed one person and injured nine more in the Mall of Louisiana food court in Baton Rouge on Thursday afternoon, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department. Five people have been taken into custody.
Police said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two parties which escalated. Several bystanders were hit.
Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center is reportedly preparing for a mass casualty event.
Police are looking for multiple shooters. According to authorities, there is no active threat to the public at this time.
In a statement, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry urged the public to avoid the area.
‘“Sharon and I are praying for those affected and are grateful for a quick response by our law enforcement officials,” Landry said.
The shooting comes just days after a man killed 8 children and injured two adults in a domestic mass shooting in Shreveport, LA.
Police in Florida also arrested a former North Carolina police officer on Wednesday evening for allegedly plotting a mass shooting at a New Orleans festival. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival issued a statement about the arrest, though it is unclear which festival the perpetrator planned to attack.
