The 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs are already delivering intensity and drama, making the recent NHL postseason one of the most unpredictable in recent years.
Less than two weeks into the playoffs, which began on April 16, several first-round series remain tightly contested and have already produced noteworthy performances and surprising results.
The Carolina Hurricanes were the first team to advance to the second round after completing a four-game sweep of the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Carolina finished the regular season with 113 points, the best mark in the Eastern Conference, and looked every bit like a contender in eliminating Ottawa quickly.
In Game 4, forward Logan Stankoven scored the go-ahead goal in the third period before forward and alternate captain Sebastian Aho added two late goals in a 4-2 victory.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, the longstanding rivalry between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers brought added intensity.
Philadelphia entered the postseason as one of the league’s most surprising comeback stories after returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Pittsburgh narrowly avoided elimination on Saturday with a 4-2 win behind a goal and assist from veteran center Sidney Crosby, cutting into the Flyers’ series lead.
On the Atlantic Division side of the bracket, there have also been several compelling matchups. The Buffalo Sabres, who are in the playoffs for the first time since 2011, have taken an early lead in their series against the Boston Bruins.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning are tied 2-2 after four back-and-forth games. Both teams posted 106 regular-season points prior to the series. The first three games went to overtime, with Montreal winning two.
In the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche entered the playoffs with the league’s best regular-season record and dominated the Los Angeles Kings. Colorado surged to a 4-0 sweep and appears poised for a deep playoff run.
One of the most entertaining showdowns of the playoffs has been between the Dallas Stars and the Minnesota Wild. Minnesota tied the series at 2-2 on Saturday after forward Matt Boldy scored with 29 seconds left in overtime to secure a 3-2 win.
Other highlights in the Western Conference include the Utah Mammoth making their first playoff appearance in team history and taking an early edge against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Anaheim Ducks have also pushed ahead against the traditionally competitive Edmonton Oilers.
With overtime thrillers, bitter rivalries and unexpected contenders already shaping what’s next on the bracket, the initial games have once again proved why the Stanley Cup Playoffs remain so compelling.
