As of Dec. 8, Tulane University School of Medicine laboratories had processed at least 23 COVID-19 tests which were suspected or confirmed to be the omicron variant.

The data, procured through an open-access medical research database called GISAID, indicates that 16 of those 23 positive results were from individuals aged 18 and 19.

No test results beyond Dec. 8 have been uploaded to the database. Since Dec. 8, Tulane has reported 622 new cases of COVID-19.

The first omicron result uploaded by a Tulane laboratory was dated Dec. 1, just days before Tulane administrators announced the arrival of the variant on campus

The 23 test results suspected of being the omicron variant represent 44% of all reported omicron cases in Louisiana.
