After a rough start, the Tulane University men’s and women’s tennis teams have earned two back-to-back wins. Just two weeks ago, the men’s record was 1-2, and the women’s record was 2-4. Now, the men’s record is 3-2, and the women’s record is 5-5.
The Tulane women’s tennis team won 4-1 against the University of South Florida. Unexpectedly, the sole lost point was in doubles. Typically, the women’s doubles teams are the strongest part of the team, although in this most recent match, they fell short. Luckily, the efforts of Campbell Ricci, Leigh Van Zyl, Natalia Perez and Natalia Fantini resulted in four singles match points.
Before that, the Tulane women’s team won a difficult 4-3 match against the University of Texas at San Antonio, which also happened to be the first match in the new Tulane Goldring Tennis Center.
The Green Wave earned the doubles point, thanks to the talented Ricci-Pierce duo and the new Perez-Fantini duo. Summer Chandler, Perez and Fantini also led their team to success in their singles matches.
Against the same UTSA opponent, the Tulane men’s team had a difficult win as well, finishing with an identical 4-3 score. Piotr Andrzejewski’s first appearance on the court this season resulted in blowout wins in both his singles and doubles matches. The team of Lance Nisbet and Daniel Phillips, as well as Andrzejewski and Asaf Friedler, won the doubles point. Friedler, Andrzejewski, and Alec Gaudin also emerged victorious in their singles matches for the Green Wave.
Their most recent match was most impressive, with a 6-1 win against the University of New Orleans. The Green Wave won all doubles points, dropping just one of the singles points.
The standout performances from the Natalias of the women’s team, one of whom has been awarded American Conference Player of the Week, and from Junior Friedler of the men’s team have truly been pivotal in these teams’ turn towards success. They have definitely been working to earn their new facility.
However, the previously unstoppable team of Chandler-Van Zyl has not won a doubles match since their streak of consecutive wins. Similarly, first-year Andres Delgadillo has not won a singles match since his remarkable performance earlier this month.
Traveling this Friday for the Diablos Collegiate Invitational, the Tulane men’s tennis team has an opportunity to keep its streak going against Arizona State University at 5 p.m. CST. Likewise, the Tulane women’s tennis team will be fighting to break their .500 record at the Goldring Tennis Center on Friday at 1 p.m. CST against Southern University.
