The man killed by a Tulane University Police Department officer after he allegedly shot two people was identified as 38-year-old Lafimmas Haynes, according to social media posts from his family.
According to police, Haynes shot and wounded two people, including a Tulane University employee, near Tulane University School of Medicine and the Tulane University Medical Center, on Thursday afternoon. He was then fatally shot by a responding TUPD officer.
According to NOLA.com, Haynes was a psychiatric patient who had recently been discharged from University Medical Center. Prior to the shooting, he had left TUMC after being asked to go through a metal detector.
Family members spoke out on Facebook after the shooting, alleging Haynes had been disarmed when he was shot. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said investigators are reviewing video footage of the shooting.
Haynes was awaiting trial in Jefferson Parish on a charge of resisting an officer, having been released on Feb. 10 because of overcrowding.
Footage of the incident shows an officer grappling with Haynes as another officer approaches with her weapon drawn.
The NOPD’s Force Investigation Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
