Lil Wayne brings Hollygrove to Champions Square

After the release of Lil Wayne’s troubled and unimpressive “Free Weezy Album” on Tidal, and months of feuding with Cash Money Records, fans might finally be getting the Weezy they deserve in his own hometown, New Orleans, with “Lil Weezyana Fest.”

Manager Cortez Bryant announced the concert, set for 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at Bold Sphere Music located in Champions Square, on Instagram. His post featured a cartoonish poster complete with lavish displays of wealth and, of course, Lil Wayne’s infamous skateboard.

“We coming home to give the city the greatest concert ever!” Cortez said.

The concert will feature a reunion of the Hot Boys, the hip-hop group that jumpstarted his career in the ’90s.

This reunion is happening despite member Turk’s assertion that missing member B.G., aka Baby Gangsta, could not make it.

“He was busy,” Turk said in an interview last year for HipHopDX. “It never worked out. It always was, ‘I’mma do this. We gon’ do this. This what gon’ happen.’ But it never did.”

In 2012, B.G. was arrested for possession of firearms, and will not appear with the rest of the Hot Boys in August.

Lil Wayne made an announcement for this reunion during an interview with Q93.3FM radio host DJ Wild Wayne in July, noting that the legendary producer Mannie Fresh will also appear to replace B.G.

Mannie Fresh was responsible for some of the success of the Hot Boys, and featured on Lil Wayne’s early hits, most notably “Go DJ,” the swaggering bass-heavy club hit any Lil Wayne fan will remember from “Tha Carter.”

“I’m coming home to give my city a real show for all its support,” Wayne said in the interview. “Please come out, enjoy yourself, lose your mind.”

In the long wait for the seemingly permanently delayed “Carter V” album, it seems Lil Wayne’s musical career is in a rut, and completely dominated by petty industry politics.

Despite the less-than-flattering news that has plagued Lil Wayne as of late, this new announcement gives the promise of a solid festival venue, and Wayne is accompanied by his friends in the industry performing with home-field advantage. Lil Wayne can inspire some of his glory days of the “Carter III” era for this hopefully annual concert and make good on his promise of a great time for his hometown.
