Tulane University admitted 11% of the nearly 44,000 applicants for the Class of 2024. This is the largest applicant pool in the school’s history, marking a 4% increase from the Class of 2023. About 1800 students will comprise the incoming class.

The admissions rate declined by 2% from 13% of applicants admitted for the Class of 2023. This decrease is significant as many of the country’s most selective universities report an uptick in admissions rates amidst the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty that looms over the upcoming fall semester. The Tulane Office of Undergraduate Admissions held virtual information sessions and campus tours for students that were unable to visit campus in March and April due to the dedensification of the university due to COVID-19.

Tulane’s acceptance rate this year remains consistent with the university’s decreasing admittance trends over the past few years.

The acceptance rate only four years ago was 25% which Tulane Director of Admissions Jeff Schiffman, in his May 4 blog post, describes as “a strong indication of how competitive admission to Tulane is becoming.”

The yield rate, the percentage of admitted students who end up enrolling, is 39%. This is a 4% increase from the previous admissions cycle.

“It took us roughly four years to achieve a 4% increase in yield following Katrina,” Schiffman said. “So what took us four years, we were able to do in just this year alone (after increasing by 5% last year and 4% the year before).”

The average ACT for the Class of 2024 is a 32, a statistic that will lose significance in the upcoming admissions cycle as Tulane becomes test optional for the Class of 2025.

Tulane continues to accept a large percentage of students from early decision applicants. Almost half of the students in the Class of 2024 chose Tulane as their first choice school through ED. ED applications rose by 35% in comparison to last year’s admission cycle.

The Class of 2024 also represents the most diverse class in Tulane’s history. 33% of the incoming class are students of color or international students. This represents a 10% increase over the Class of 2023. The incoming class is also the most globally diverse with 160 international students  hailing from 20 different countries. There are also more than 15 admitted students who are U.S. citizens living abroad who will be joining the Tulane community.

Satya Dattagupta, vice president of enrollment management and dean of admission, has made diversity a personal priority. “I am very confident that the campus experience of our students with such a wide range of backgrounds, ethnicities, and life experiences will be extraordinarily positive,” Dattagupta said. “Learning, working, sharing, and living with people unlike oneself is one of the ways we grow as people. This enhances our understanding of differences and our strengths, builds strong bonds, and greatly benefits our community.”

In addition to global diversity, the Class of 2024 also includes students from 44 states across the U.S. The top five states represented are New York, California, Louisiana, Illinois and New Jersey.

Tulane also accepted the fourth class of Spring Scholars. This class consists of over 200 students who will begin their Tulane experience in the spring semester of 2021.
